Juniors up to some good...

Jordan Schultz

Jordan Schultz and a team of Junior members that include Lorenzo and Maddie Perrault are up to some interesting science that involves our reef. Jordan shared alittle bit about the project at the last club meeting. Check out their write up below...

"Project Pegasus is comprised of four high school students from the Windansea Surf club as well as Pike Spector, a graduate student from San Diego State University (SDSU). Pike suggested to us high schoolers that we should start an internship project with him. He proposed that we build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in order to study local reef systems (like Windansea). With knowledge on the reefs, our team can better understand how our surf breaks form which can be valuable information to the local life guards. Our team was very excited to start this new project! The next thing we knew, we were at the Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory (CMIL), working on critical grant writing skills. The ROV kit was purchased under a grant that Pike and his lab mates have at CMIIL. However, our team plans to write our own grant to purchase a multi beam sonar attachment to place onto the ROV. The ROV is set to arrive very soon which will begin our process of soldering, cutting, wiring, and gluing. We will gain valuable experience engineering this contraption every Wednesday for several weeks. As of right now, we are gaining crucial grant writing skills which will be immensely helpful in our later careers. Our team is incredibly thankful for the amazing opportunity we have to learn more about our ocean." -Jordan Schultz
