"Mir"anda Joseph - Surf Team Mama

Updated: Mar 8, 2020

I watched Miranda Joseph, age 54 tear apart Malibu Point at Call to the Wall. She made it look easy - picking only the best set waves to put on a clinic connecting smooth maneuvers all the way to finish in front of the judges on the inside. Not only there for her heats, she was a fixture underneath the Windansea tents loudly cheering on her teammates with enthusiasm, "BLEEP! BLEEP!".

The junior women and menehune girls sit close to "Mir" to listen for golden nuggets of advice before their heats. We all take notes as she points out where to sit with the changing tides and conditions, where to nose ride, and not. We all know Miranda always makes the finals and its no surprise when she takes 1st Place.

She is written into the history of Windansea and is a long time member who came to be part of our club in 1988 through her husband, Micheal Joseph. Miranda has a strong connection with our club and roots that run deep raising their young family (Joseph and Kira) in La Jolla before moving to the central coast. The friendships created through her time with the club are life long and relationships she cherishes deeply. For Miranda and many other members this is a second family. Windansea has offered light to Miranda’s life and given her gifts beyond what she could have expected coming into our club.

“It’s brought so much friendship, and respect for surfing” into her life. She goes on to share, “it’s an honor to be able to surf for Windansea and be apart of our history”. Proud to be on a team with “The Best Surfers in the World”, Windansea is an important piece of Miranda’s life just as she is a valued piece of our family. She is the heart of our team spirit. Even through the countless serious injuries she has endured, Miranda has racked up a plethera of first places over the years.

I've known Miranda my whole life, from the time I was very little she would watch Keili and I on the weekends we found ourselves under the Windansea tent. Known for her strong consistent surfing and ability to win, I admire her most for the love she shows for surfing and all of us. Just hanging out with her makes me feel strong, confident and ready to win my next heat!

Miranda will be surfing with her daughter Kyra and another Windansea mother/daughter duo, Michele and Maddie Miller, September 8th for the SURFAID CUP and MSA coalition event. To learn more about SURFAID and support their team, visit their donation page.
